Earsock man

There's a curious character that I sometimes see as I walk to the light rail station in the morning. One of the breakfast food vendors has a unique piece of winter clothing, which I refer to as the earsock. It looks like a long, thin, knit sock that's open at both ends. It goes under the chin, and then slips over the gentleman's ears. I wonder why he chose this accessory rather than traditional earmuffs or a hat.

If you're good at knitting or crocheting, you could make an earsock yourself. If you lack those particular skills, you can always just put regular socks over your ears like this guy:
