Dust storm

Around April, Beijing is exposed to some dust storms that have originated in the desert. The dust storm is not like a sand storm where it will sandblast your face. It's more like if you removed the bag on your vacuum cleaner and threw the dust into the air and then inhaled, although maybe not that extreme. During the dust storm the wind is quite strong so is a good idea to wear sunglasses to protect yourself from any larger particles that might have been picked up by the wind.

Hard to find foods

I've successfully located in Beijing just about every food product I typically buy in the US, except for the following items:

  • horchata mix
  • avocados
  • sour cream
  • See's candy
  • Peet's coffee
  • Guinness (with widget)
  • Tecate beer
  • Pacifico beer
Shanghai had plentiful vanilla Coke (produced in the Shanghai bottling plant) but I've not found it in Beijing yet. The canned Guinness I've had in China has been from their brewery in Guangzhou, it is lacking the widget and has a non-standard taste.

A brainteaser

What does the following recipe produce?

  • one apartment
  • one opened bag of chocolate-coated mini-donuts
  • one opened bag of Chips Ahoy cookies
  • Go out of town and leave ingredients undisturbed for two weeks
After 2 weeks, you should have approximately 10 or more new nocturnal roommates, each with 6 legs and antennae. Enjoy!
